LinkedIn Hack #1: Personalise your Connect requests

By Vincent Ramos

Director, Advancement at the Holmesglen Foundation

Every so often, I'll publish a brief post that focuses a single aspect of using LinkedIn. This is the first of our LinkedIn Hacks.

If there's one thing I wished more LinkedIn users did, it would be to add a personal note when connecting.

Just do it. It's a small effort that adds a great deal to the interaction. It not only helps the person you're linking with understand the connection you share or (in the case of a cold contact) the reason you're getting in touch, your note appears in their Messages area, so it's also a great way to start a conversation.

Here's how it works

When you connect with a profile from a computer, you should see something like this:

Custom Note

Simply click on 'Add a note' and type a personal note before you connect. Like I said, it's a simple step with a big impact.

On Mobiles

Not long ago, you weren't able to add a note when connecting from mobiles and tablets, but there's no longer an excuse. You can now 'Personalise invite', as follows.

Instead of clicking 'Connect' immediately, click on the button with the three dots (it's officially called the 'More Options' icon, just so you know!) on the profile of the person you want to connect with:

More info

You'll be given a number of options to share and connect. Simply click on 'Personalise invite' and type in your note:

Personalise

So, go on. Add a note when you ask to connect.
