Cardiac Services

Alexandria

When did you graduate, and what are you doing now?

I graduated at the end of 2013. I’m working in Cardiac Services - it’s a mix of Coronary Care and Cardiac-Medical (I am currently on maternity leave).

What do you love about nursing?

I love with nursing the difference between every shift...no two shifts are the same.

Also the difference you can make in someone’s day. People get scared when their heart is brought up. Being able to give comfort and reassurance and receive trust back is very rewarding.

What's a typical shift like?

My shift can involve:

  • Looking after patients post angiograms, ablations, pacemakers, electro-physiology studies.
  • Getting patients ready for open heart surgery
  • Picking patients up from emergency
  • And looking after patients with cardiac failure.

I’m never too sure what I’ll get when I walk in.

Do you have any advice for those starting out in nursing?

Nursing is hard. There are going to be days that stretch your emotions to breaking point.

You’re committing yourself to career long learning. Speak up, ask questions.

Be an advocate for your patients and yourself.

Make sure you take time out for you and try to leave work at work.

Remember if no one dies at the end of your shift, it was a good day.
