Happy Ramadan to our Muslim learners!

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islamic culture who believe during this holy month, God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed. The month-long observance, beginning Monday 12 April and ending Wednesday 12 May, will see Muslims fasting from dawn to sunset, reciting verses from the Quran and attending prayer sessions.

Why is fasting important during Ramadan?

Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam. These pillars, or duties, form the basis of how Muslims practice their religion. According to Islam Guide, the Pillars of Islam are:

  • Shahada: faith in the Islam religion,
  • Salat: pray five times per day facing the direction of Mecca,
  • Zakat: give support to the needy,
  • Sawm: fast during Ramadan, and
  • Hajj: make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during one's lifetime.

Ramadan fasting is done from dawn to dusk to purify the soul and the body. This is the time when Muslims feel a sense of being close to God and refrain from materialistic pleasures.

How do you wish someone a Happy Ramadan?

You can exchange Ramadan greetings by saying “Ramadan Kareem,” which translates into “Have a generous Ramadan,” or “Ramadan Mubarak,” which roughly translates into “Happy Ramadan.”
