At the Learning Skills Centre we see many students who need help with referencing.

It can be tricky! The following quick list of Do's & Don'ts is based on common mistakes we see:

DO:

Keep track of your sources

Use the organization’s name if you can’t find a human author.

Write (n.d.) if you can’t find a date from your source.

Write your References on a page on its own at the end of your assignment.

Centre the word References (not reference list) & put it in bold.

List the References in alphabetical order (according to surname).

Check the library website for formatting & punctuation

Include the reference in your reference list if it is used as an in-text citation. (The exception to this is unpublished works  e.g lecture notes which only need to be included in-text).

Include the author’s surname as part of the in-text citation – as well as year.

DON’T

Mix up the first and last name of the author. First names are only ever included as an initial (after the surname) in your References

Include website addresses as in-text citations

Include author’s qualifications and name of the article in the in-text citation.

Include hyperlinks from website addresses in your References

Include links that do not link to anything i.e. check your links!
