Holmesglen is strongly committed to both teaching and practising environmental sustainability.  So you may have noticed that the Library also plays its part by turning off lights, and powering down computers when they are not needed.

Ever wondered what else your library does to help make Holmesglen greener? Here are just a couple of examples.

By lending books, we help reduce the amount of paper being used to print books. As books for study and research are bought by libraries rather than individual students, many publishers now print books in small runs or even on demand (only as they are ordered), so no wasteful oversupply of unwanted books. Just think how many more books would need to be produced if you needed to buy them all yourself.

E-books, e-journals and online newspapers and videos available via our e-resources page further help to reduce the need for printed books, as well as making them available to our students 24/7 online. It’s hard to imagine how big our libraries would need to be, and how much more paper would be used if these resources were in paper formats.

Our Subject guides and video help guides on YouTube have helped us reduce the number of paper handouts. Although we still have some paper guides, our digital resources and guides are quick and easy to update and reduce the need for throwing out old paper versions.

If you’d like to learn more about environmental sustainability beyond what you’ve explored in your courses, there are numerous books and e-books on the topic in our collection and EcoSpecifier Global is a useful guide to eco-products and material across many industries.
