1. Will students be required to be interviewed by Andrew Carruthers before the takeover?

Yes, students will be interviewed by BHM teachers and then by the hotel.

2. Is there any training that you will provide the students before their takeover? If yes, how long?

The plan is for all students to have familiarisation training at Novotel, prior to the Takeover happening (2-3 days). As part of our preliminary discussions, we have also considered the possibility of everyone undertaking Accor's 'Heartist' training (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30K51mSyEPk) which runs for one day.

3. Will this hotel takeover shifts be paying the students?

No. As with our Hospitality Professional Practice placements in industry in Stages 5 & 6, there will be no payment. This is an opportunity to be part of a unique industry experience, to broaden your network and develop potential employment opportunities. There will be no classes held during Takeover week, so hopefully students will still have some free time for their casual jobs.

4. Do the students get to choose which position they want to be in?

Students can certainly choose the role that they apply for. However, as per my response above, everyone will need to be interviewed for roles when they are advertised and will be selected based on both soft and hard skills. It will be important to remind students that not everyone can be General Manager.

5. Do students with tattoo can apply for front-of-the-house positions?

Yes. However, it will still be required to cover some of the visible ones while on shift. (Covering it with a concealer or wearing long sleeves).

6. Is this Novotel’s first time to have a hotel takeover by students?

Yes. For Glen Waverley branch, it is their first time that students will be taking over their hotel for a week.

7. What are the issues students may face while doing the takeover?

Students are still expected to come to class, submit their assessments on their respective subjects and due dates and review for upcoming examinations. Issues that students may encounter may be on how to balance their uni life, part time jobs if they have and taking over the hotel.

8. Are students required to make reports regarding the hotel takeover experience?

Yes. A daily reflective journal should be done by the students at the end of their daily shift and will be submitted to Andrew Carruthers. The journal must include the experience regarding the people around, what went well, what are some bad and good experience. Then, at the end of the takeover, students will be required to make a report comparison between theories that are learned from school and the experience itself.
