Last Wednesday was the first of a three-part series of Event Workshops aimed at developing essential skills and creating networking opportunities for students to engage with industry guest speakers.

In case you missed it, the recording can be found here, with the recap and some key highlights and takeaways below!

We were first introduced to Vincent Ramos, the Director of Advancement, (A.K.A. professional networker) who spoke about networking fundamentals and etiquette.

Key takeaway #1: Maintain an active network

Why do I need a professional network, you ask?

Vincent spoke of the importance of cultivating a group of people who can act as resources for you, but in turn, you will also be a resource for others. This symbiotic relationship is especially important in an industry, such as events, where connections, and who you know is everything!

Vincent stressed the importance of maintaining an active network, even if you don’t need to leverage your connections at the moment. Just like any relationship, you should maintain connections with contacts so when you do need something, people are more likely to help you out, instead of being that stranger who asks for a favor.

Key takeaway #2: Active networking is by far the most effective job-seeking activity.

LinkedIn is a fantastic resource to find events, meet-ups, and start forming the foundation of a connection with people in the events industry. Reach out to connections, nurture a relationship, ask for informational interviews to introduce yourself. Doing these things can set you apart from the rest of the pack and show potential employers and professionals your interest.

Key takeaway #3: Start TODAY

You may think, I don’t even know where to start when trying to form connections on LinkedIn. Holmesglen staff and fellow students are the perfect start to creating your network. Follow Holmesglen on LinkedIn, connect with teachers, staff and your peers. Remember, networking is a professional relationship.

LinkedIn can be an intimidating beast to tackle, but in the current pandemic, people are hungry for connections, so what better time to start your LinkedIn profile?!

Our guest speaker, Madi Antonopolous is a Holmesglen alum who after extensive positions, now works for Disney. Madi was accompanied by Sam Heatherington, an Event Manager for Disney.

Key takeaway #4: Volunteer and get as much experience across the events landscape as possible

Madi graduated in 2015 and since then, has garnered a wealth of experience across all types of events. Her biggest piece of advice - volunteer for everything and in all types of roles.

Prospective employers look for a range of experience in admin, on-site, ops etc. This kind of experience creates a well-rounded event manager that is highly desirable.

Sam also encouraged joining industry groups, naming EEAA, MEA and VMA in particular as resources to find jobs and research the industry.

Well, that’s a wrap for session 1 - tune in later this week when I’ll recap session 2!
